Alex Sanson

Alex Sanson (Metaform) has worked as a sculptor and installation artist for nearly 30 years, with a focus on kinetic, interactive and immersive sculpture.

Alex has created large-scale installations for dozens of arts and music festivals.

The kinetic sculptures Spherophyte and Nebulous, were installed at White Night. Small Revolutions, a rolling ball sculpture with interactive, kinetic and multimedia elements was commissioned by Melbourne Fringe Festival for Federation Square. Material World, a house sized immersive installation, again was commissioned by Melbourne Fringe Festival for Federation Square.

Flow States, a long swirling river was created with community workshops plus additional kinetic sculpture was installed at Upstream Festival in Wodonga. And Real Festival in Penrith, WOMAD, Rainbow Serpent Music and Arts Festival, Split Milk in Canberra, The Outback Eclipse Festival in the South Australia desert, Earthdance International Peace Festival, and many other arts and music festivals.

A most recent major permanent work is the kinetic sculpture, Djalgala Yarra, commissioned for Blacktown hospital, Sydney. Alex is currently artist in residence for the Rainbow Serpent Arts and Culture Foundation assisting with facilitating a public art program in the Pyrenees. Work in schools has included a Creative Learnings Partnership residency at Rainbow P-12 school culminating in the installation of a kinetic sculpture and various work supporting arts programs or creating entrance features, gates and sculpture at numerous schools including Merri Creek Primary, Wattle Park Primary, St Michael’s Grammar, Brunswick South West Primary and Melbourne German International schools and others.

His smaller scale pieces have been on show in many galleries including Flinders Lane Gallery, Living Arts Space in Bendigo, Horsham Regional Art Gallery, Lost Ones in Ballarat, Stockroom in Kyneton, Lot19 in Castlemaine and Yering Station in the Yarra Valley and have received multiple awards for his interactive kinetic sculpture.
